23. Get to Know Portland’s Gay Food Icon James Beard in I LOVE TO EAT at Portland Center Stage

ILoveToEatYou there, the one taking a picture of your burger at Little Bird or your ramen at Boke Bowl.  Yes you!  You wouldn’t be doing that if it weren’t for James Beard, the gay Portland food icon who literally started the foodie scene waaaaaay back in the 40s.  He was the first chef to have a cooking show, which led to Julia Child, which led to Saturday’s full of cooking shows on PBS, which led to Food Network and Top Chef, which led to you sharing pictures of your food on social media.

So, the least you can do is get to know James Beard, and the best way to do that right now is to go see the one-man play I LOVE TO EAT at Portland Center Stage.  Want to know more about Beard’s gay life? PQ Monthly has a great article about the play and the man himself.

Get tickets here.  And then the tough decision….where to have dinner that night?  I recommend 2011 James Beard Award winners Le Pigeon or Pok Pok, of course.
